Fresh Produce
Sweet and juicy corn on the cob is a summer favorite and for the last few weeks of August and the month of September the vast majority in Washington will be grown locally – which tastes even better! Yellow or white, on the cob or cut off everyone seems to enjoy a fresh ear of corn, pick up a few for yourself while they are in their peak season.
How to pick your ear...
Fully ripe sweet corn has bright green, moist husks. The silk should be stiff, dark and moist. You should be able to feel individual kernels by pressing gently against the husk.
Here are a few Corny Suggestions
Purchase a few ears and pull back the husks and silk and hang to dry. Once dry, remove the husks place the entire ear in a microwave safe bowl and in just a few moments you’ll have homemade popcorn!
Instead of the typical boiling method, roast it on the grill in the husk. Soak entire ear of corn – husk and all in water for a good thirty minutes, remove from water and place ear on a hot grill and let cook for about 25 – 30 minutes turning occasionally so all sides of the ear get equal cooking time. Hot off the grate, remove husk and top with butter and salt and pepper.
